The Salisbury Middle School team finished 3rd at the regional competition and was one of three teams out of 11 in the Baltimore/Annapolis and Chesapeake Chapter -- and the only team from the Eastern Shore -- to qualify for the state competition. The state competition was held at Johns Hopkins University on March 18. The Salisbury Middle team finished 13th out of 31 teams competing from all over Maryland, an outstanding finish in the team's second year of competition.

Congratulations to Rosy Gao, 7th grade, this year's school spelling bee winner!   Pratham Dhawan, 6th grade, finished in second place.  Both students completed the entire school spelling list, spelling words such as 'netsuke' and 'a posteriori'.  Rosy finally won on the supplemental list by spelling 'plaque' for the win.  She'll advance to the Eastern Shore Regional Bee at UMES in March.

Parent University:

Want to know what will be tested on PARCC this year? Do you need clarity about how your children’s scores can be used to improve their performance?

In just one hour, you can get the answers to your questions by attending the next Parent University. Session on Thursday, February 16th. It will be held at the Wicomico County Public Library, 6:30-7:30 pm.

Childcare will be provided: children ages 3-5 can participate in the children’s section activity. Other children, grades 1-8 can bring their homework to complete in the Homework Lab.

Because space is limited to the first 50 responses, please sign up now by e-mailing Faye Wilson, fwilson@wcboe.org or Beth Sheller msheller@wvboe.org. You also may call 410-677-4529 or 410-677-4453.

Salisbury Middle School was the recipient of two grants this week. The first was the Samuel W. Seidel Memorial Reading Forever Endowment. This will help our school library to purchase books to inspire our students to read. We are thankful to The Community Foundation of the Eastern shore for providing us with this grant. The second award was the Exxon Education Alliance Award. This grant provided $500 to our math and science programs. We are very thankful for the Springdale Food Mart in East New Market for nominating us for this award.
